Homestead Exemptions for those who are 65 years of age or older and signed by July 1, 2023 will be applied to the 2023 assessment. The 2023 assessment will have taxes due in September 2024 and March 2025. The current tax bill is based on the 2022 assessment and includes credits/exemptions that were signed by July 1, 2022.
For Commercial, Industrial and Railroad Property - beginning for the 2022 assessment year property taxes, the Business Property Tax Credit has been repealed and replaced with a Two-Tier Assessment Limitation. The first $150,000 of assessed value will now receive an assessment limitation that is equal to Residential Property (54.6501%). The 2023 assessment notices for property located within the city limits of Iowa City will be mailed prior to April 1st. Most single-family residential properties will see significant increases in value. Iowa Code states that residential and commercial property must be valued at market value in odd-numbered years. The 2022 assessed values will be used for the taxes payable September 2023 and March 2024.
